Like an unsure ballet dancer on her first night, the duchesse appears to be standing on it's pointes as if uncertain of which direction to hop.
The Duchesse or Duchesse-brisée became popular in the 1750s in the new drive for comfort inspired by the French court at Versailles. The Duchesse is essentially a day bed with one end taller than the other - an armchair and a low chauffeuse joined together by a stool or a tabouret.
This variation includes an armchair and an ottoman which can be used independently without looking incomplete. But put them together and you get a day bed that children could use for sleepovers or parents could laze on.
A custom monogram marks the ownership of this one.
